Gutters and downspouts

Gutters are doing their job when the water leaves the roof and lands away from the foundation. Overflow into the brick, a sagging run, or a downspout that dumps at the porch is the usual reason people call.

Repair, or a new run

Open seams, loose hangers, and a downspout that has pulled away can be repairs. A gutter that has rusted through, or a run that was too small for the roof the day it was hung, should be replaced. We look at the roof area draining into that side before we pick a size.

Where the water comes out matters as much as the trough. A new gutter that still empties against the slab has not finished the job. Extensions and the direction of the outlet are part of the quote.

Guards

Gutter guards are optional. They help on roofs under pines and oaks, and they are a poor idea if the guard you pick sheds water over the front lip in a heavy rain. If you want guards, they are a line on the quote, not a surprise add-on.

Gutters questions

Do you install guards?

Yes, when you want them. We will say if the roof pitch and the debris around the house make a guard useful or likely to overshoot.

Can gutters be done with a roof replacement?

That is the best time. The old gutter often has to come off for the drip edge anyway. We can price both, and you can approve either one.

Why is water still hitting the brick?

Usually the gutter is undersized, pitched backward, or the downspout cannot keep up. Sometimes there is no kickout where a roof dies into a wall. We look for all three.
